WOW, Overwatch, Hearthstone, Diablo 3, Heroes of the Storm and the StarCraft series will become unplayable in China from 23rd January 2023, when NetEase’s current license expires. Diablo Immortal is unaffected. This morning, NetEase president of global investment and partnership Simon Zhu - who says he’s spent “10,000 hours” playing the above games - reacted to the announcement in an extraordinary statement posted publicly via LinkedIn, where he blamed behind the scenes “damage” done by a “jerk” - who he left unnamed....

The new studio will be based in Helsinki and led by Marko Lastikka as director, formerly of Zynga and EA. In the past, Netflix has bought existing studios. This will be the first it will build from scratch. Previously-purchased developers include The Walking Dead mobile developer Next Games (bought back in March) and Oxenfree creator Night School Studio....

In a statement issued to Eurogamer this morning, Nintendo confirmed it had “no plans to increase the trade price of its hardware”. The response goes further than that of Microsoft’s, which last night noted Sony’s dramatic decision by simply stating it was keen to “offer our fans great gaming options”, before reiterating the Xbox Series X and S’s launch price point. Nintendo’s full statement includes a quote from company president Shuntaro Furukawa, given during its June AGM, and then reiterates that Nintendo’s prices are staying put for now....

Arika’s The Grand Master series first appeared in Japanese arcades back in 1998, where it quickly gained a reputation for its difficulty, thanks to the rapid drop speed increase during play. It also features a grading system, ranking performance all the way up to Grand Master. Several sequels followed, and the series eventually made the jump to home consoles in Japan with 2005’s Tetris: The Grand Master Ace for Xbox 360 - which was to be its final release....

Although we found out back in July that the Switch version, Oddword: Soulstorm Oddtimized Edition, was coming, developer Microids has only just finalised the release date. To celebrate, the team has released a ten-minute long video of “oddilicious brand-new gameplay footage” for your viewing pleasure: Oddworld: Soulstorm Oddtimized Edition has been “built exclusively” for the Nintendo Switch. If you haven’t yet pre-ordered the Limited Oddition or the Collector’s Oddition there’s still time, with all pre-orderers also securing a Digital Original Soundtrack and a Digital Artbook....

Although the release date hasn’t been announced yet, preorders are now open for the physical Limited and Collector’s Odditions, the latter of which includes an exclusive nine-inch figurine of Abe and a 160-page artbook. Any pre-orders from participating retailers of the Limited or Collector’s Odditions will also include the game’s OST and a digital artbook. Sounds like some tasty goodies for any Oddworld fans. In our Oddworld: Soulstorm review, Christian Donlan felt the game’s magical moments and brutal setting were well worth the few rough edges....

Launching alongside Season 2, the new hero - a tank from the same brotherhood of monks as Zenyatta - is reportedly designed to hold off other tanks in a bid to improve the free-to-play shooter’s combat balance. Ramattra has two forms; the defensive Omnic form, and Nemesis, which is just as aggressive as it sounds. “The leader of Null Sector is on a mission to create a better world for Omnics… no matter what it takes,” is all the video’s description tells us, along with revealing Ramattra’s arrival date....

Emma reported on the mod in July, speaking with lead developer and maritime engineer from the Netherlands, Robin Bongaarts. Bongaarts has been working on the project since September 2006, and finally now a portion of it has been released. It’s worth noting part one does not include the sinking of the Titanic. This is planned for a later release. Nor does it include a fully-fleshed out storyline, or the full interior of the ship itself....

The news was announced as part of the Pearl Abyss Q3 earnings presentation. Both DokeV and the company’s much-anticipated MMO Crimson Desert have been delayed, the latter into the second half of 2023 and the former past its original target of 2023. ORIGINAL STORY 8/10/22: Persona 3 Portable and Persona Golden 4 are coming to “modern” platforms next year. Although we already knew that the ports were on the way, we finally have a firm release date; in a tweet posted to Twitter earlier today, publisher Atlus revealed that the two games will be coming to current- and last-gen systems, as well as PC and Switch, on 19th January, 2023. Specifically, P4G is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC Windows, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, whilst P3P is coming to the same, but will also be available on Steam, too....

Persona 5 had a bit of an odd gestation. It was developed solely with PS3 hardware in mind, but after missing a few release dates it ended up shipping on PS3 and PS4 in the fall of 2016, as one of the last major titles to hit Sony’s seventh-gen system. Models are stylised but low-poly, environments are boxy and use basic baked lighting, and texture resolution is poor. The PS4 version of the game benefitted from a 1080p rendering resolution and UI but left everything else unchanged - a very barebones conversion of the PS3 code....

At the end of August, both Sony and Chinese publisher Tencent increased their shareholding in the Elden Ring and Soulsbourne studio. Sony now owns just over 14 percent. Now, speaking to Reuters, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst has said the purchase opened up the possibility of FromSoftware properties getting the PlayStation Productions treatment. “You should think of collaborations on the game development side first and foremost,” Hulst said of FromSoftware, “but it’s also not unthinkable with our PlayStation Productions efforts that we explore opportunities”....

It’s effectively a re-release of Clap Hanz Golf, which we first saw on Apple Arcade last April, and which was the developer’s first non-PlayStation foray. On PlayStation, Clap Hanz was behind the brilliant Everybody’s Golf series, games we’ve been championing on Eurogamer for some time. Clap Hanz Golf was essentially more Everybody’s Golf on a different platform - so to see it reborn on the Switch where it can be played with traditional controls is a very welcome thing indeed....

The presentation will last for 20 minutes, will include first looks and updates on both PS4 and PS5 games, and will focus primarily on games coming from Japanese publishers. You can watch the broadcast on Twitch and YouTube. A PlayStation Blog post about the event notes that there will be no updates on PlayStation VR2 titles or hardware. It’s not all Japanese publishers too, with others from around the world offering updates....
