Frostpunk, which launched to much acclaim in 2018, is a fascinating, if decidedly gruelling, experience. It’s a sort of narrative-rich blend of survival sim and city builder, challenging players to stay alive and, as much as is possible in Frostpunk’s desolate sub-zero world, thrive. That’s done by establishing a settlement with a vast generator at its centre, a precariously fuel-hungry device intended to provide some degree of warmth for your population as, at your command, they set about scavenging the land for supplies needed to expand their new home....

After launching back in 2007, many PC games at the time were coded to require GFWL - including Fallout 3 GOTY - although most have since been updated to no longer need it. Yesterday, a new patch for Fallout 3 GOTY finally freed it from its lingering GFWL requirements....

Whispers of an Xbox appearance for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition first emerged earlier today, after a new console listing was spotted on the PEGI ratings database. However, it didn’t take long for Microsoft to make it official, confirming that both it and Age of Empires 4 are heading to Xbox and xCloud in 2023. More specifically, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition comes to Xbox on 31st January, while Age of Empires 4 is expected to arrive “later in the year”....

“If Lost Ark on consoles is something that fans really want, then I think it’s something both parties would consider,” he said. Maggie first entered the realm of Apex Legends lore a little over a year ago today, as part of Season 8 newcomer Walter ‘Fuse’ Fitzroy’s Stories from the Outlands animated introduction. Here, players saw the demolitions expert spending some quality time with Maggie, his childhood friend, until the pair had a disagreement that left him missing an arm. Following that video’s explosive conclusion, Mags has popped up a few more times in Apex Legends, with one memorable appearance seeing her wreaking some serious mass destruction on King’s Canyon....

Season 8’s big addition, of course, is new hero Fuse - an Australian demolitions expert and Bonecage Champion from the planet Salvo who, as you might imagine, gets a substantial airing in the latest, unexpectedly 80s-styled trailer. There’s a peek at new lever-action rifle the 30-30 Repeater, and the trailer also appears to confirm earlier leaks from data miners that Fuse’s special abilities will include the use of his mechanical arm to toss stun grenades, as well as a devastating ultimate (reportedly named The Motherlode) that sees the massive cannon on his back come into play....

The Viking era epic passed the milestone in December, Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot told investors last night (as noted by Axios). Released in late 2020, Valhalla has been another hugely-successful entry in Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed saga, following 2018’s popular Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Crucially, however, Valhalla has also been the series’ best-supported in terms of post-launch content. Valhalla’s initial season pass included its Ireland and Paris expansions, which added fresh storylines set over sprawling new maps....

Nintendo shared the news in a tweet with a new trailer of the bear and bird duo in action. Rare’s incredible N64 platformer, Banjo-Kazooie, is one of the most celebrated games on the console and likely one of the most requested games for the service. It also brought us details on the three different editions of Battlefield 2042 available, with different prices for its cheapest edition depending on where you’ll play. For this basic edition, Battlefield 2042 costs £10/$10 less on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One than you’ll pay on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For fancier editions, it’s £10/$10 less on PC only. So, Battlefield’s standard edition costs £70 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but £60 on PC and last-gen....

An update, free for existing owners of the game, will add 4K resolution, HDR support and a boosted frame-rate “up to 60fps”. On PS5, three graphics modes will be offered. Quality (30fps at 4K), Quality Unleashed (40+ fps “up to 4K”) and Performance (60fps locked at 1440p). DualSense support and Activity Cards will also be available. On Xbox Series X/S, the same three graphical options will vary between console types....

These updates initially started in September of last year and they just keep on coming. March alone has seen 13 changes to the game (thanks TheGamer). There are many theories as to what these updates are all in aid of. Some on Reddit have taken this as a sign that Bioshock Infinite will be getting a remaster, but this seems unlikely. Others have speculated it could be pointing towards publisher 2K getting the game ready for Steam Deck compatibility....

The Legendary Edition, if you’re unfamiliar, bundles all three games and single-player DLC from the original Mass Effect trilogy and gives the whole thing a modern-day sheen, with support for 4K and HDR, and 60 FPS on PC and consoles from PS4 Pro/Xbox One X onwards. Most of the Legendary Edition’s top-level improvements - which include extensive work on the original Mass Effect, ranging from dramatically improved environments to overhauled Mako driving - have been detailed previously, but a new post on the BioWare website breaks these down still further, giving fans a comprehensive list of everything due on launch day....

Transformers: Reactivate was shown last night at The Game Awards 2022, with a fresh trailer you can see below. The project is being designed as an online action game for one to four players where you play as some of the franchise’s most iconic characters. And yes, you can transform between a vehicle and a bot (obviously!) The news comes alongside word that Splash Damage has acquired Bulkhead, the UK studio behind World War 2 shooter Battalion 1944, which is also working on Transformers: Reactivate....

Firstly, yes - nearly all shader compilation stutter that we experienced in the first 30 minutes of the game has now been eliminated. We can’t guarantee that all shader compilation stutters are gone beyond this, but we would at least expect this to be the case! This fix makes the game much more enjoyable, as dramatic tension isn’t broken by severe hitching when new objects or effects appear, but things aren’t quite perfect yet....

No bother! I’ll play the demo tomorrow, I thought. At some point, anyway. So this morning, before the kids woke up for school and nursery, I turned my PlayStation 5 on, pressed X on Resident Evil Village, and… “Countdown until next demo: six days…” Shit. I’d had a vague understanding that Capcom was rolling out the Resident Evil Village demo in time-limited chunks - something I thought was an idiotic idea at the time - but I did not realise just how time-limited it would be....
